Six Weeks, a Set of Clubs, and a Trophy Apeiron x Everton in the Community
Six Weeks, a Set of Clubs, and a Trophy Apeiron x Everton in the Community Golf has a reputation problem. It's seen as expensive, closed off, and ...
Golf, inflatables, and a queue of kids who've never held a club
Not every bit of grassroots work needs to be a six-week programme.
Sometimes it's a Saturday, a field, and a kid who's never swung a club in their life having a go because there happened to be nets set up next to the bouncy castle.
Community fun days are already happening across Merseyside — organised by schools, clubs, charities and local groups who've done the hard part of getting everyone together.
We turn up and add golf to the mix. The inflatables, the dart board, the nets. Kids queue up, take their shots, and find out whether they can do it.
Most of them have never tried. That's the point.
Everything raised on the day goes to the event.
Not to us, not to the Academy — to whatever the fun day is raising for. We're there to add something to a day someone else is already putting on, and it wouldn't sit right to turn up and take a cut of it.
There's no sign-up, no kit to buy, no dress code, and nobody watching to see whether you're any good. A kid can wander over, have three shots, and wander off again.
That's a completely different proposition to walking into a golf club for the first time — and for a lot of families it's the only version of golf they'll ever be offered.
Some of them love it. A few come back to us through the Academy. Most just have a good ten minutes on a Saturday, which is fine too.
Golf spends a lot of energy worrying about how to attract the next generation. Turns out a decent chunk of it is just being in the right field on the right afternoon with something to hit.
If you're running a fun day, gala or community event across Merseyside and want golf on it, we'd like to hear from you.
