Why every Apeiron golf day raises money for someone
Every golf day we run raises money for a charity. Not a percentage, not a raffle table in the corner — the day is the fundraiser.
The most recent one was for Sean's Place, a men's mental health charity, and it raised over £3,000.
Sean's Place is close to us for personal reasons.
That's true of a lot of people who end up supporting men's mental health charities, which is rather the point. Most men who care about this don't arrive at it in the abstract.
We'll leave it there. The charity does the work; we help pay for it.
There's a version of this article that claims golf fixes your mental health. It doesn't, and anyone who's put one out of bounds on the 18th knows it.
But it does several things that are genuinely good for you, and it does them without anyone having to announce they're doing something about their mental health.
You're outside. Four hours in the open air, in weather, looking at something green.
You walk. A few miles, without it feeling like exercise.
You talk. This is the big one. Golf gives men a reason to spend four hours together — side by side rather than face to face, with long gaps where nobody has to say anything. Conversations happen on a golf course that would never happen across a table.
You solve problems. Every shot is a small puzzle. It occupies the part of your head that might otherwise be occupied by something worse.
You stay calm when it goes wrong. Golf goes wrong constantly. Learning to lose a hole and walk to the next tee without carrying it with you is a skill, and it isn't only useful on a golf course.
None of that is treatment. But four hours of it, regularly, with people you like, is not nothing.
We'd like to run golf programmes with Sean's Place — getting people out onto a course, not only raising money from one.
That's the ambition for the next stage: not just handing over a cheque, but putting clubs in hands.
If you'd like to know more about their work or support them directly, you'll find them at seansplace.org.uk.
And if you're struggling yourself — talk to someone. A friend, your GP, or one of the organisations set up for exactly this. It doesn't have to be a crisis to be worth talking about.
Apeiron runs golf days across Merseyside and the Northwest, each raising money for a chosen charity. If you'd like to get involved, or have a cause you'd like us to support, get in touch at info@apeiron-clothing.com.
